MPhil in Inclusive Innovation Studies Inclusive innovation will include the research and development in interdisciplinary studies that will result in creation of practical designs and artifacts, business models and services, processes or products that can be seen as practical innovative solutions to market or societal problems that create a better future for Africa. These applications will consider the interaction of the human and physical environment throughout each step of the innovation creation value chain, which will sometimes result in unplanned and unforeseen new inventions and capabilities for a better future. Open innovation models that embrace the innovation solution’s ecosystem yield distinctive, relevant ideas with both commercial and social development possibilities. The source of innovation increasingly flows from individuals who are unconstrained by set cultures or organisations and deeply committed to changing the world around them for the better. The fuel to innovate is created when these kinds of people, with their vast expertise, life experience, passion and ideas, come together with free reign and in an environment poised to support new possibilities. Inclusive innovation studies will focus on inclusive solutions that are relevant to building Africa’s future by creating an environment that rewards risk taking in an unfettered environment, allowing for radical, unorthodox approaches with the potential to disrupt - a risk that is generally too costly for existing businesses or governments to take. Programme Details The MPhil is a one year full-time programme run at the GSB through the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation. Applications are open to register for an MPhil degree for 2014 with a range of expert faculty with interest Inclusive Innovation Studies. The UCT Graduate School of Business is looking for highly motivated individuals to spend a year in a unique, free thinking, applied academic programme to envision a better future for Africa. The GSB will convene a solution focused group aligned to African markets that uses interdisciplinary practical studies, collaboration, open design and dissemination to create a better future for Africa and humanity, through a community of inventors that work in an open collaborative way as members of research teams. The focus shall be on unanswered or unorthodox questions that challenge conventional wisdom and are relevant to Africa focused challenges and opportunities. The Master’s students shall spend the majority of their time on research activities and the creation and live demonstrations of their inventions. The Graduate School of Business will provide a nurturing entrepreneurial environment with easy access to business support, angel funds, foundations and investors for venture spinoffs. [-]

Executive Education Open Enrolment Programmes The UCT Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) open-enrolment programmes are holistic, multi-disciplinary, research-based, and encourage participants to develop their ability to think critically and innovatively. Delegates also develop the ability to learn continuously through application and experience. The UCT GSB also recognises the importance of providing opportunities for development in specialist subjects, disciplines and industries. The selection of specialist short courses covers a spectrum of interests, ranging from general management issues to those that are industry-specific, such as electricity regulation. Approach In an emerging economy, a new perspective on management education and organisational development has become a core business imperative. Against this backdrop, it is important that leaders and managers develop new knowledge contextually. They must fully understand their environment and its complexities in order to find new ways of addressing issues arising within this. In addition, they require an expanded skill set. In order to support executives and managers in this, Executive Education programmes at the UCT GSB are holistic, multi-disciplinary and research-based; they encourage participants to develop their ability to think critically and innovatively to meet new demands. The business school draws on a considerable range of expertise in delivering these courses, using local and international resources, and is proud of the reputation it has built up. UCT Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) Executive Education programmes are based on the following principles of adult learning: Learning and development is an active process and takes place in a real work or life context The interplay between work and learning means that an adult learns optimally within his or her own work context, where learning is enhanced by doing - the learning is taking place where it is actually applied and practiced. Adults learn as they do – each action can lead to new insights that enable them to learn from experience Reflection on the experience of learning is as important as the theoretical learning, and allows positive behavioural patterns to be documented and sustained while negative behavioural patterns are noticed and consciously improved. A process of continuous improvement and development becomes an intended consequence of the learning process. Nurturing self-awareness in the relevant institutional and societal contexts, all the while building analytical and systems-thinking skills, is key to success. Adult learning is a social activity Adults learn through conversations and debates. The programmes are embedded in social processes that provide the opportunity for communicative action and interaction. The programmes have emerged according to recent developments in social science and management, referred to as practice turn, a focus on the day-to-day activities that make up social systems. New knowledge cannot be assimilated without previous knowledge and experience Although all learning material is grounded in theory, participants are not expected to accept this at face value. Students construct their own theories by building on their experiences and existing knowledge. Values and relevance need to be explicit in learning – managers pursue what they value Learning focuses on integration, synthesis and evaluation that go beyond the analytical aspects of management and draw on existing experience, commitments and purposes relevant to the knowledge construction process. This increases engagement in the learning process. Academic Programmes Modern business management practice requires a wider appreciation of value and value creation across organisations, industries and economies. In today’s competitive and transforming socio-economic environment businesses need to focus on current and future value-adding processes and the stakeholders for which value is or is not recreated. Credit-Bearing Programmes The credit-bearing programmes are targeted at practicing managers. Their starting point is that the world of management is too complex to lend itself to simple prescriptions and formulaic methods. Thus they emphasise process and knowledge, rather than just technique. Open-Enrolment Programmes The UCT Graduate School of Business open-enrolment programmes are holistic, multi-disciplinary, research-based, and encourage participants to develop their ability to think critically and innovatively. GSB PhD Programme The GSB PhD programme is an essential component of our research strategy and PhD students are a vital part of our research community. PhD students should graduate from the GSB not only with an internationally recognised PhD qualification, demonstrating thought leadership on their area of specialisation, but also a broader understanding of and passion for research. The PhD Process The typical duration of a PhD project at the GSB is between three and four years, if the student is dedicating the bulk of her or his time to the project. A four- to five-year period is to be expected if the student is dedicating more or less half of her or his time to the PhD. We recommend that students are able to dedicate at least two full days a week. Experience shows that otherwise it is difficult to create and maintain the necessary momentum. A candidate must be registered for at least two consecutive years, although registration for a year at another university may be accepted as part of that period. Supervisors can at their discretion require students to commit to certain time intensity commitments. Students enrolled in the PhD programme are expected to: Participate actively in the GSB’s Research Calendar, especially in their first year of registration; Agree with the supervisor on a set of commitments and a timeline, including a date of submission for the official proposal, to be outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (which is signed once registered in the programme); Keep the supervisor updated with progress within suitable, agreed timeframes; Take a proactive approach to identifying their learning needs and to implementing suitable responses; and Actively participate in the academic life of the GSB through lecturing, research seminars and / or co-supervision of MBA research reports. Once the student is registered in the GSB’s PhD programme, she or he has about six months to develop a full research proposal, which will need to be presented to GSB faculty, formally accepted by the GSB Research Working Group, and submitted to the UCT Higher Degrees Committee, prior to commencement to field work. A PhD Progress workshop will be held twice a year as part of the GSB Research Calendar to enable a presentation of the proposals. Failure to make such a presentation at a minimum level of scholarly quality may result in a failure to be re-registered for the PhD in the second year. To assist in this process, GSB PhD students will be expected to participate actively in the GSB Research Calendar. This includes: A research design and methodology workshop, which is normally hosted in January and co-facilitated with international guest lecturers. This workshop aims to provide participants with an opportunity to read about and discuss foundational concepts in research design, theory and method, and to relate these to their research projects; At least four PhD and Research Colloquia (PRCs) – these are two- or three-day workshops in which participants discuss key themes and readings on organisational and management theory and on methodologies. Application Process When considering an application for registration for a PhD, the University Senate will be guided by the GSB Director and evidence that the candidate is in possession of a recognised Master’s degree (or in special circumstances, at the discretion of the Senate, an approved Bachelor’s degree or qualification recognised by the Senate as equivalent). Candidates must demonstrate that they have the necessary competencies in research methodology and practice that are required for the completion of an independent study research degree. The application will need to include the following: A preliminary proposal of about five pages in length or about 2500 words. The purpose of the proposal is to make a case for the research to be undertaken, and it will need to show that the applicant has the ability to identify a pertinent research question, has at least an initial grasp of the relevant literature, and has some of the necessary competencies in research methodology and practice that are required for the completion of an independent study research degree. The proposal should include (not necessarily in the following order): An abstract of 100 words; An outline of the essential background literature; The rationale of the proposed research, with reference to the intended practical and theoretical contributions; The key question(s) to be addressed and the main objectives (and if appropriate, hypotheses) of the research; The approach to be taken in doing the project, in terms of research design and data generation and analysis methods; References. A curriculum vitae An academic transcript Two appropriate references A covering letter, which should include: A motivation for embarking on a PhD A motivation for choosing the GSB At least one nomination for an appropriate supervisor based at the GSB, and a justification of this choice Applications will be assessed by the GSB Research Working Group, or a predefined sub-set thereof. The nominated supervisor(s) will be invited to this discussion. A joint decision will be made to confirm that the applicant can register for a PhD at the GSB, after which the application is forwarded to the University’s Doctoral Degrees Board. Your nominated PhD supervisor must be actively publishing in the scholarly literature in the field in question. A PhD dissertation must focus on an important and substantive research problem and its outcome must be an original contribution to science within the field of research. GSB faculty can discuss applicants’ research ideas and preliminary proposal at their discretion, but we advise you not to contact potential supervisors without some preliminary research ideas. Note that you cannot be registered if there is no suitable or available supervisor for your proposed research at the GSB. International applicants for whom English is a second language are required to submit one of the following: A recent score on the TOEFL Test of at least 570 (paper-based) or 230 (computer-based) or 88 (internet-based). This must be obtained within 3-5 years before applying to UCT. A recent overall band score of 7.0 (with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the international English Language Testing System (IELTS). [-]
