The master's program “Italian Studies” is a binational four-term degree course supported by the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and the Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, at the end of which a double degree (Master of Arts/Laurea Magistrale) will be obtained.
The double degree and the firmly integrated one-year-long stay abroad at the leading university of Venice make this masters programme a unique academic offer within Germany. Frankfurt/Main with its international institutions, corporations, publishing companies and cultural organizations as well as Venice with its cultural heritage and important cultural organizations (Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venedig, Fondazione Nono, Findazione Cini) offer multiple possibilities of practice-based projects and work-orientated internships.
Students that enroll themselves in Frankfurt will spend their first and fourth semester in Frankfurt, the second and third in Venice. Students that enroll themselves in Venice will spend their second and third semester in Frankfurt.
The Italian literature, language and culture constitute the core area of the programme provided by the Institute of Romance Languages and Literatures (Institut für Romanische Sprachen und Literaturen) of the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.
Within the interdisciplinary module, however, there is the possibility of expanding the range of studies by participating in Italy-related courses of the fellow institutes, such as Comparative Literature (Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft), German Studies (Germanistik), History (Geschichte), Art History (Kunstgeschichte), Musicology (Musikwissenschaft) and the History of Religion (Religionsgeschichte). This way, the students will be provided with the opportunity of participating in current projects by research-based learning, thus creating their own interdisciplinary academic profile.
The interdisciplinary, research-oriented masters programme promotes the students’ analytical and conceptual skills and their ability to deal independently with as well as present complex coherencies in a clear and methodical way. Through the obligatory, one-year stay abroad in Venice and Frankfurt, respectively, the students acquire a profound knowledge of the literature, culture and history of the respective partner nation. Their awareness for linguistic and cultural differences will be raised and they will learn to think in terms of cross-cultural and cross-linguistic coherencies.
Through the integrated internship or the practice project (four to eight weeks) they will additionally acquire practical skills and gain insight into the field of literature and culture management. Thus, the masters programme “Italian Studies” qualifies students for an academic career within the scope of a doctorate programme as well as for occupations in cultural organizations, in the field of journalism, publishing or education.
The programme is aimed at graduates of German universities with a Bachelor degree in Romance Studies or a comparable degree, who want to consolidate their Italy-related, intercultural competencies through a double degree masters programme and aspire to working in the media and/or cultural organizations or to a doctorate programme.
