Um mestrado é o primeiro nível de pós-graduação e pode ser obtido após a conclusão de uma graduação. Completar um mestrado geralmente requer dois anos de estudo integral, o qual equivale de 36 a 54 créditos semestrais.  

A biologia examina a atividade dos organismos nas áreas de função, crescimento e evolução, bem como a forma como tais fatores afetam onde o organismo vive. Ela pode ainda estudar como organismos individuais interagem dentro dos seus próprios ambientes.

The graduate program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Youngstown State University leads to a Master of Science degree with opportunities in a wide variety of fields. The program seeks to develop the qualities of independent thinking and problem solving skills, with a goal of preparing students for research and academic careers. The Biology Faculty Research Profiles provides brief descriptions of the Biology faculty research interests. Students may pursue the M.S. degree in Biological Sciences in one of two options. The Thesis Option is a research-intensive program designed to provide students a strong foundation in fundamental biological principles and theories through coursework and the completion of a faculty-guided research project (thesis). The Non-thesis Option allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of biology through coursework and the writing of a graduate research paper. The complete application for admission, including all supporting materials, should be received by the School of Graduate Studies and Research at least four weeks before the beginning of the term in which the applicant plans to register. YSU admits graduate students in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. [-]
